Completed portrait

I had a blast with her hair, trying for a balance of detail and soft. Not easy. I ended up with a yellow/green highlight as the other colors I tried just didn’t give that feeling of light. Hair can be such a challenge and she does not have all that much hair showing. Overall I am quite pleased with this painting.

Slowly But Surely

I mentioned in my post on Sunday that I was going to start a painting. Yes, I hear you saying “but Christy you paint all the time”. The thing is that I paint all the time in my journal. I only paint two or three canvases a month. It is the stopping and starting I regret when working on a canvas. It just frustrates me, I want to paint a canvas as close to straight through as I can. I’m sure there are painterly reasons for this but I don’t want to get into all that.

Art Journal Portraits And A Painting

Art Journal Updates

I’m working on goals for 2010 and doing a huge amount of research and learning. Being so deep into other interests (even if they eventually lead back to art) I have not had the focus in my journal that I normally would.

Art Journal Work In Progress Portrait

As artists we all face personal challenges. You know that thing that you struggle to make happen the way you intend for it to. My current challenge, what I am working hard to overcome is the ability to sketch on dark substrates. White, yellow, any light color is fine. But when I sketch on dark colors such as the purple in the image below I have a very difficult time of it. This frustrates me so much that I am determined to keep at it until I get it figured out.
