Drawing 5 for #draw365 And GPP 36

I don’t know how sharp my pencil was today, but my x-acto knife was sharp enough.

I combined today’s drawing practice with a bit of a journal prompt from Michelle.

The beginning: I needed to quickly rough out some stencils. I painted some fun watercolors last week (Florida based flora and fauna) and decided to quickly sketch them again onto card stock. No erasing necessary since they would be cut out anyway.

Next up spend untold minutes carefully cutting these out into stencils. I am not good with sharp objects and must be careful lest I lose a body part or two.

Amazing even me, I managed to get them all cut out with no loss of blood. It took awhile. Imagine a four year old with their first pair of safety scissors, tongue stuck out the side of their mouth, face scrunched up in obvious concentration. Moving on…

This is the journal spread that I had prepped with color the night before. Thank goodness for that, I was able to get back some of the time spent cutting out the stencils.

Not only were we supposed to use the items as stencils (and I used the cutout as reverse stencils) but we were to also incorporate them into the page.

I do realize that I was supposed to create a “richly layered” and I imagine a ‘cohesive’ layout, but, I got a bit carried away (exhausted) from the cutting out part. So I got a little lost in the forest.

However, I did have fun painting and detailing my little stencil critters.

Are they not just adorable I ask you? I had a hard time choosing a favorite but I have to go with the lizard.

After all I am a Florida native and lizards are one of those things that I love about my home. Not to mention the “wow factor” whenever you have someone who is not from Florida the first time they come upon one skittering past their foot, or up a wall. Lizards totally rock!

It really does look like you had much more fun with the lizard! I’m enjoying the palm tree, though, because of all the texture and depth that you managed to apply to such a “simple” piece. And your description of your cutting exercise is wonderful :)

Thanks everyone. I too think the cold is getting to me and that is why I was so focused on summer-like colors and subjects.

    Hello Christy,

It’s nice to see how people get the same instructions, but adapt them completely to themselves !

This is fabulous; what a great forest you’ve created. The owl is a beauty. This “tongue stuck out the side of their mouth” made me smile because my Dad always did this when he used scissors. Sure, you had to look carefully, but the tongue was always there ;-)
