• Using Your Sketches In Your Journal

Posted on January 28, 2010 by in Art Journals, Video

I know a lot of you are taking classes (or self teaching) how to draw. I see your posts of pencil drawings and your practice practice practice posts. What I don’t see is a lot of you using them in your journal pages. So I wanted to show how I use my daily sketches.

First get a good photo or scan of your drawing (generally I do this for my posts on twitter/flickr groups #draw365 anyway). The reason to do this is that you never know when you might want to use this image again. Really, you just never know.

Once you have a good digital copy what do you do with the sketch? I know many artists save them, but I have far too many of these to just pile them up somewhere. And why should I? Really, I made them to use them. So use them I do!

Below is a video of my art journal for January 27th, 2010. In this journal I’ve used a drawing that I made a few weeks ago. I hope you find this useful to you. Let me know if you have any questions about how I did something or a product I used.

One note, I use ModPodge because I have found I get the best transfers from it. I cover it with GAC100 glossy because it makes the transparency colors vibrant and protects.

What an incredible experience! I watched you work – for days! I can’t believe you put that beautiful work into a journal then close it up – it needs to be displayed! Tell me you display them! I miss you, Christy. I wish life wasn’t so nutty.

Hi, this is the first time I saw your blog, surfed on there from the #draw365 posts on Twitter. This is awesome! It’s always so interesting to see how something gets created from beginning to end. Lovely work!

This one is a keeper…the artist in you really shines when you work in mixed media.

  5. I loved seeing your entire process sped up! What a good idea for the old sketches!
    Thanks,
    Jen
