• I am the guest artist this month on LindaEast.com

Today marks the beginning of my month long rein as a guest artist over on LindaEast.com. I have to thank my good friend and fellow artist Linda for the opportunity to have my art and profile listed on her wonderful website.

The above picture is a self-portrait in oils on 140lb watercolor paper (Arches) done as part of a challenge with several other artists. This was my first foray into using oils on paper and my first true attempt at a self-portrait. I expect I will do more of them in the future.

If you have the opportunity head on over to Linda’s website and check out some of her amazing drawing and jewelry. I also wanted to mention that Linda’s website was designed and developed by me and it is such a kick to now see my art on this site.

Thanks so much for giving me some tips on painting children. I tend to gesso over paintings if it’s not working, also. The thought of starting this one over again isn’t appealing to me, tho..that’s the only reason I keep working on it. Well, that and I’ve got so much painting time in it already. I’d hate to wash away 5 days of painting right now.

If it was an actual commission piece, I probably would start over, but I’m only doing it for fun and practice. The only one who really cares how it comes out is me, at least I think so, anyway.

I’m off to see Linda’s website. Congrats on being her guest artist!! How exciting!!

ps: the way I video myself painting is by setting the camera on a tripod as close as possible and zooming in all the way. It makes it a little cramped because the zoom on my camera isn’t that great, and the tripod is usually up against my chair. But it’s not too uncomfortable. I can’t do the entire painting on camera because I have to be in front of the painting sometimes, and the way I videotape, I’m sitting off to the left side.

I’ve also found that using a table top easel instead of my big standing easel is easier for filming also..unless I’m using a larger canvas, of course.

I understand completely. I am working on a project right now that I really can’t gesso over it, and I’m very happy with it. Except for the hair. And that part of it I would dearly love to just gesso away if I could.

I think it also comes from painting outside of your comfort zone. Children just do not have the facial structure that adults do and it is hard to accustom your painting style to that.

I only have a desktop easel. Someday I would like a big grownup one too ;) But for now just painting on an easel and not flat is progress for me. I used to have a lot of problems with my paintings not looking realistic and finally realized it was because I was painting flat and seeing the piece from that angle, which is not how it is viewed once on a wall. I will never go back to painting flat now.

I have a very hard time painting if I am feeling cramped or confined so that is why I can’t seem to videotape in a way that leaves me comfortable and yet not in the way. I will keep trying though as it was such fun to watch you painting and to watch Jane paint.
