• Revisiting A Face

Posted on July 22, 2010 by in Painting

Do you ever find yourself fascinated by a particular subject that you want to paint it multiple times?

I have been revisiting this model’s face and have painted her four times now. Trying to alter her without losing who she is and what she is expressing.

The above is a work in progress of the most recent version. Below are the three previous versions:

I will be painting someone new next. I have found the revisiting to be a very pleasant and interesting process though.

Oh, yes! I love your different versions of her. Each one is different, yet you are definitely still painted the same face. However, if you hadn’t pointed it out, I probably wouldn’t have noticed that you were painting the same person. Funny, huh?

I have just started to do this little re-painting trick. Last week I repainted the little girl wearing a red hoodie. I made the colors different, but kept her face the same. I also repainted one I called Paul the Scientist. I’ll be blogging about it soon. I also repainted the little girl Melody with the blond hair that I did about a month ago. I’ve actually painted her 3 times now. Each one looks very different. And, I’m highly considering repainting Johnny Cash. I’m thinking of using different colors this time for his skin tone.

Painting the same painting again sure helps when I’m kinda out of new ideas, but I still want to paint. One website I read recently (it might have been emptyeasel.com) suggested doing the same painting 10 times. By the time you get to the 10th version, you should see improvement, they said. hm..I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
