Today marks the beginning of my month long rein as a guest artist over on LindaEast.com. I have to thank my good friend and fellow artist Linda for the opportunity to have my art and profile listed on her wonderful website.

The above picture is a self-portrait in oils on 140lb watercolor paper (Arches) done as part of a challenge with several other artists. This was my first foray into using oils on paper and my first true attempt at a self-portrait. I expect I will do more of them in the future.

Always trying something new and today’s painting adventure was nothing less than a blast. I’m really enjoying letting paint and water mix and flow and not being ‘perfect’ about it. Letting it take me where I may not have wandered otherwise.

I decided to name this one in honor of motherhood. As a mom who’s child is now an adult and off carving out a life of her own mother’s day now feels different to me. More matronly than before for some reason. Perhaps that is because I am also now in my forties?

I have recently become aware of a trend (an old one in fact) among art galleries and other prominent groups in this industry to honor emerging artists who are under 25 or 30. I’m a bit surprised by this but I suppose I shouldn’t be. Age discrimination is alive and well apparently.

I have never pursued any type of gallery representation for my art. I’m beginning to feel that if I ever decided to I would be better off getting an agent in order to avoid the pitfalls of the wrong sort of galleries and owners. Things to ponder on a Thursday afternoon as I begin a new art journal and several new paintings.

We all have the inner self and the outer self. One we know and few really see, and the one we show to the world. This abstract painting is a part of my new series all focused on the mysteries of the modern woman.

Duality is a representation of the two faces we all wear and hide.

Painting Big Funky Blooms

I love to paint in series, just like I love to read in series. For the past week I have been painting this one big bloom in various colors and varying the number of petals.

Learning new skills in abstract composition

I’ve been busy studying a new style of abstract composition. This painting is 18″ x 24″ x 1.5″ on canvas done in acrylics, watercolor and ink. Finished with a lovely matte varnish.

Title: Matched

There are so many small details, scratches into paint, small doodles and alcohol bubbles.

Each face started from a wash of burnt umber. The pink is the original background. After the washes these two faces just appeared.

The blooms were the original inspiration and my main focus until the faces appeared. I love when that happens!
