I started out as an altered book artist. When I became interested in art journaling it was a natural transition for me to use an altered book.
At first there were very few artists doing this. But now the trend has kind of taken over. I see altered book journals everywhere now. It is a beautiful thing and I will always love them.
But, I wanted a change, something different. And I have noticed other artists are feeling this way too. I didn’t want to leave the ‘old book as a new book’ idea, or the idea of recycling and up-cycling. So I looked around for different ideas and I came up with my first idea for Altered Backgrounds. And it didn’t take long before I realized something… I could merge the two ideas into one and take advantage of them both by using books that otherwise I couldn’t use because of the paper in them.
So I created an art journal from a book I normally would have passed by. And it turned out fantastic. And then a magazine.
But it wasn’t enough. So I decided to take a few of my other ideas and mesh them all together into what I call ‘Eclectic Altered Journals’. They are art journals. They are made from altered books. But t,hey are something more than even that. They could be considered finished after just the first stage of creating all of the backgrounds. Or they can be taken on a journey of ideas and play that leaves you with a fast and fun way to work in your journal. And with this format you can work in your journal anywhere, anytime, because a lot of the foundation work is already done for you.
Pages that can be worked on when you have an hour, a whole day, or even just 15 minutes while you wait for an appointment.
